An Expedition To Study The Arctic

Named after the polar star, the Polarstern set sail for the Arctic region on September 20, 2019.

The German icebreaker, a ship that is designed to literally break the ice, is going to freeze in place in the icy waters above Norway. This mission, known as Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of the Arctic Climate, or MOSAiC for short, will be the largest Arctic expedition ever.

Five Deeps Expedition: A New World Record!

On August 24th, Victor Vescovo and his team became the first people to reach the deepest point of all the oceans on Earth.

The voyage, named the “Five Deeps Expedition,” came to a close after Vescovo’s journey to the bottom of Molloy Trench in the Arctic Ocean.

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), June 2019 was Earth’s warmest June on record.

Wildfires, producing plumes of smoke visible from space, are spreading in Siberia, Greenland, Alaska, and Canada as a result of lightning and high temperatures.

Temperatures in Anchorage, Alaska reached 90 degrees for the first time on record and a total of 2.06 million acres were burned. Winds carrying smoke have caused air quality to plummet in cities in Siberia.

Carbon Dioxide Hits New Records

You may have heard of global warming. Over the past few decades, our Earth’s average temperature has been rising dangerously fast. The air is becoming more and more polluted and scientists are trying to warn us of the dangerous effects.

Unfortunately, the rise of carbon dioxide emissions in the Earth’s atmosphere has not stopped.

On May 11, carbon dioxide levels reached the highest they have been in likely 3 million years. Researchers at Hawaii’s Mauna Loa Observatory measured the carbon dioxide in the air to be 415 parts per million.

When A River Doesn't Run Free...

Rivers have connected people, nurtured ancient civilizations, and inspired writers and conservationists.

However, a recent report paints a grim picture of the state of our world's rivers.

Using satellite images and other data, researchers discovered that only 37% of the rivers longer than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) are still free-flowing. A river is considered to be free-flowing if its flow and course are not affected by humans.
