Vamos a ver.

Help Spot The Walrus!

Do you want to participate in a worldwide game of Spot the Walrus?

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have launched the “Walrus From Space” research project.

The project will allow volunteers to spot and count walruses from a stream of high-definition satellite imagery. The project hopes to bring over 500,000 volunteers aboard and is set to run over the next four years.

Let’s take a closer look at walruses, and why spotting them is so crucial.

The Secrets Of The Soot!

Did you know that clues to centuries-old human activity lie frozen deep in… Antarctica?

Researchers recently found traces of fires set by the Maori people, some of New Zealand’s first inhabitants, in the form of soot, deep within ice cores on the uninhabited continent of Antarctica.

Ice cores are an important time machine into the past, helping scientists determine everything about a certain period of time from temperature to wind patterns and even volcanic eruptions.

U.S Declares 23 Species As Extinct

In 2004 a kayaker in Arkansas claimed to have seen an ivory-billed woodpecker-- a bird thought extinct by 1944. His claim set off another wave of search, but bird watchers and scientists alike came back empty-handed.

Now, after over a decade without any more sightings, officials have declared the ivory-billed woodpeckers extinct.

This iconic woodpecker is among the 23 species that the US Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed removing from the endangered species list.

Let's look at a few of the species and what led to their extinction.

An Oil Spill Off California's Coast

A shiny layer of oil, that looks deceptively like a scene of abstract art, blankets Talbert Marsh.

An oil spill off the coast of Southern California has unleashed over 130,000 gallons of oil into the surrounding waters. The toxic sludge has seeped onto beaches and harmed birds and marine life.

The oil spill was discovered on the morning of October 2 and happened only a few miles away from popular recreational beaches such as Huntington Beach. Due to strong tides and winds, the effects from the spill spread quickly to the shore and nearby marshland.

What Led To Power Cuts In China?

At the United Nations General Assembly in September, China announced that it would no longer build new coal-fired power plants overseas.

Under this pledge, China will instead export renewable green energy technologies to developing, low-income countries.

This action comes even as China is struggling with soaring coal prices, electricity blackouts, and impacts on manufacturing industries back home.

Let's look at China's coal strategy, both within the country and abroad.

A Smarter Way To Predict Rain

Did you know that 9 out of 10 Americans check the weather more than three times a day?

Weather forecasting certainly plays a major role in our daily lives. Now, more than ever, we need to adapt to unpredictable weather conditions that result from climate change.

DeepMind, a Google artificial intelligence (AI) company, has developed a new technology called "nowcasting" that can calculate the chances of rain within the next 90 minutes!

So how does this new technology work? Let’s take a look.
