Enjoy Seashells, But Leave Them!

Do you love collecting seashells when you go to a beach? Well, you may need to think twice in the future.

Mauritius, an island country located east of Africa, is facing a shocking dilemma: there are now fewer seashells on its sandy beaches.

Shells such as the Monetaria annulus, a species of sea snails whose shells are adorned with a gold ring, and the Monetaria moneta, also known as money cowrie, are now much harder to find than before.

Large Icefish Nests Discovered!

What might you expect to find at the bottom of the Antarctic ocean? Surely not an icefish breeding ground twice the size of Paris!

The breeding ground was discovered in February 2021, but the findings were only published recently. Located in the Weddell Sea, the colony stretched across 92 square miles of the ocean floor. Using a remotely operated camera and several dives, researchers concluded there are over 60 million active nests.

A Report On Our Earth's Temperature

Did you know that seven of the hottest years in recorded history have been the last seven years?

This was confirmed recently by the EU's Copernicus Climate Service. In fact, 2021 was the fifth hottest as evidenced by the devastating flash floods, wildfires in the west, and hurricanes in the east. Ocean heat also set record high temperatures in 2021.

Let’s take a look at how this report is connected with our actions, the science of atmospheric heat, and its interplay with the mechanisms of our planet.

Why Did Norway Blow Up A Dam?

Hydropower dams, or dams that produce electricity from water, are sources of renewable energy that are considered good for the environment.

However, the recent destruction of a hydro dam in Norway reveals that sometimes these ‘green’ dams can have a negative impact on ecosystems.

A campaign by fisher Tore Solbakken and 120 other members of a Norwegian angling club urged the Norwegian government to destroy the dam in order to restore local fish populations to their ecosystems.

Sunbirds: Singing The Same Song!

Can you imagine singing the same song for millennia?

A recent study on East African sunbirds suggests that these vibrant birds have been doing just that.

This discovery comes as a surprise for biologists. Young birds learn much in the same way we learn to speak. Through mimicry, they imitate the sounds of other birds around them. Over generations, however, birds often come to develop their own unique songs.

Why have the sunbirds stuck to the same tunes? Let’s find out.
